A hostage siege is now underway at a Kenyan university attacked by Somali Islamist gunmen this morning. <br /><br /> The number of people wounded has reportedly risen to 65.<br /><br /> At least 14 people are said to have been killed and dozens hurt when masked gunmen raided the Garissa University College. <br /><br /> Police and soldiers have sealed off the campus that lies close to the border with Somalia.<br /><br /> In a statement, the head of Kenya’s police force, Joseoph Boinet, said: “the attackers shot indiscriminately while inside the university compound.”<br /><br /> He also added that police had been guarding the university’s four hostels at the time.<br /><br /> Al-Shabab, which has links to al Qaeda, has claimed responsibility. <br />Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, its military operations spokesman, told Reuters, “we sorted people put and released the Muslims.”<br /><br /> The group was behind a deadly attack in 2013 on the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, having declared it would punish Kenya for sending troops into Somalia to fight the group.

Al Shabab Beheads 9 People in Kenyan Village<br />By THE ASSOCIATED PRESSJULY 8, 2017<br />Extremists from neighboring Somalia beheaded nine civilians in an early morning attack on a southeastern village in Kenya, government officials said on Saturday, as concerns grew<br />that the group known as the Shabab has taken up a bloody new strategy.<br />The increase in attacks presents a big problem for Kenya’s security agencies ahead of the Aug. 8<br />presidential election, said Andrew Franklin, a security analyst and former United States Marine.<br />The attack occurred in Jima, a village in Lamu County, said James Ole Serian, who leads a task force of security agencies combating the terror group.<br />In recent weeks, the country has seen an increase in attacks claimed by the group, raising security concerns about next month’s presidential election.<br />In recent months the group also has increased attacks in Kenya with homemade bombs, killing at least 46 in Lamu and Mandera counties.
In an unprecedented move, Kenya's Supreme Court nullified President Uhuru Kenyatta's election win, citing irregularities and ordered a new poll within 60 days. Said Judge David Maraga, announcing the verdict of four out of the six judges. The Supreme Court made the decision after Raila Odinga, a veteran opposition leader, challenged the result in the court, claiming widespread rigging. As news of the court's decision spread, opposition supporters poured on to the streets to celebrate.
