Mr. Bean es el protagonista de la serie. Un extraño, simpático y solitario personaje.​ Es torpe a más no poder, y sus situaciones son muy cómicas. Tal vez por eso se haya considerado que es un ángel caído a la Tierra bastante ingenuo en el mundo terrenal. De ahí, que al inicio de cada capítulo el personaje cayera de una luz blanca procedente del cielo. Mr. Bean raras veces habla, y cuando lo hace, por lo general sólo son unas pocas palabras murmuradas en tono bajo y cómico. El humor viene en gran parte de soluciones originales (y muchas veces absurdas) a los problemas y que, no pocas veces, le llega a poner en situaciones muy comprometidas. Su nombre nunca fue revelado durante toda la serie; sin embargo, en la película Bean (1997) el nombre del personaje aparece en el pasaporte como "Mr. Bean", utilizando la abreviatura "Mr." como <br />primer y único nombre, mientras que en la película Las vacaciones de Mr. Bean (2007), su nombre fue escrito en el pasaporte como "Rowan Bean".
