At least 200'000 people have been raped in DRC since 1996. With devastating frankness National Army soldiers confess to raping women and children in the towns they were supposed to be protecting from rebels.
"Raping gave us a lot of pleasure. When we rape we feel free", confesses a Congolese National Army soldier. He admits to raping 53 women and children, some as young as 5 years old. In this endemic cycle of violence, children born of rape are getting raped. According to Ida Sawyer from Human Rights Watch, the army commanders responsible for these horrific abuses are not brought to justice; instead they are often "rewarded and given positions of power and wealth". Efforts are being made to address this state of impunity; those in charge "must be pursued on a criminal level for these serious crimes", says the Military Prosecutor of North Kivu. But with the judicial system mostly fractured and forgotten, the only ones bearing the consequences are the victims. Their faith in the country has plummeted; as one victim says, "our army has looted and raped their own people. Our life in Congo has no meaning".
Studio 9 Films

For downloads and more information visit: http://journey.webbler.co.uk/?lid=65206

Therefore, on Earth, volcanoes are generally found where tectonic plates are diverging or converging. For example, a mid-oceanic ridge, such as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, has volcanoes caused by divergent tectonic plates pulling apart; the Pacific Ring of Fire has volcanoes caused by convergent tectonic plates coming together. Volcanoes can also form where there is stretching and thinning of the crust's interior plates, e.g., in the East African Rift and the Wells Gray-Clearwater volcanic field and Rio Grande Rift in North America. This type of volcanism falls under the umbrella of "plate hypothesis" volcanism. Volcanism away from plate boundaries has also been explained as mantle plumes. These so-called "hotspots", for example Hawaii, are postulated to arise from upwelling diapirs with magma from the coreโmantle boundary, 3,000 km deep in the Earth. Volcanoes are usually not created where two tectonic plates slide past one another.

Erupting volcanoes can pose many hazards, not only in the immediate vicinity of the eruption. One such hazard is that volcanic ash can be a threat to aircraft, in particular those with jet engines where ash particles can be melted by the high operating temperature; the melted particles then adhere to the turbine blades and alter their shape, disrupting the operation of the turbine. Large eruptions can affect temperature as ash and droplets of sulfuric acid obscure the sun and cool the Earth's lower atmosphere (or troposphere); however, they also absorb heat radiated up from the Earth, thereby warming the upper atmosphere (or stratosphere). Historically, so-called volcanic winters have caused catastrophic famines.

At the mid-oceanic ridges, two tectonic plates diverge from one another as new oceanic crust is formed by the cooling and solidifying of hot molten rock. Because the crust is very thin at these ridges due to the pull of the tectonic plates, the release of pressure leads to adiabatic expansion and the partial melting of the mantle, causing volcanism and creating new oceanic crust. Most divergent plate boundaries are at the bottom of the oceans; therefore, most volcanic activity is submarine, forming new seafloor. Black smokers (also known as deep sea vents) are an example of this kind of volcanic activity. Where the mid-oceanic ridge is above sea-level, volcanic islands are formed, for example, Iceland.

Subduction zones are places where two plates, usually an oceanic plate and a continental plate, collide. In this case, the oceanic plate subducts, or submerges under the continental plate forming a deep ocean trench just offshore. In a process called flux melting, water released from the subducting plate lowers the melting temperature of the overlying mantle wedge, creating magma. This magma tends to be very viscous due to its high silica content, so often does not reach the surface and cools at depth. When it does reach the surface, a volcano is formed. Typical examples of this kind of volcano are Mount Etna and the volcanoes in the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Source:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcano

The biodiversity of the Congo rainforests is unique. The forests are home to more than 400 mammal species, more than 1,000 bird species, and at least 10,000 plant species. But in the savannas of the lower reaches of the Congo River, the formerly rich fauna is almost extinct. The civil war and bushmeat hunting have greatly reduced the number of animals. Now the environmental organization WWF is sending biologists there to find out just how much biomass and biodiversity still exists in the Congo basin.

More from global 3000 at: http://www.dw.de/program/global-3000

Helping Babies Breathe in Democratic Republic of the Congo
Multinational corporations have been looting the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for decades at the expense of innocent human beings, most of them children. This public service announcement (psa) features Congolese children from Los Angeles, California breaking the silence about the tragedy in the DRC funded by multinational corporations. For more information about the DRC, please visit www.friendsofthecongo.org. Special thanks to the African Christian Community Church of Southern California and the parents who allowed their wonderful children to participate in breaking the silence. You are all heroes.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has accused some international groups of trying to destabilize the country. With reference to reports of the discovery of mass graves near Kinshasha said to contain hundreds of dead babies and fetuses, a government spokesperson says that in reality no crime has been committed. The spokesperson said that the bodies will only be exhumed if a judge orders it. On the other hand, some rights groups cast doubt on government denials and cause for an investigation by an independent commission to find out the truth. teleSUR

In June, a team of 17 people from National Community Church in Washington DC returned to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to work with the children at the Congo for Christ Center.

Living in a region marred by years of brutal violence, these children have become orphans. Despite these difficult circumstances, these children have hopes and dreams for the future. We believe these kids are the future leaders of the Congo and will help bring restoration to their land.

To learn more about sponsoring a child, go to www.global-outreach.net

For more information on serving with a missions team, go to www.aoneeight.org
